Why Should You Detox Your Body?
In today's world, our bodies can be under constant stress from exposure to toxins through our food, lifestyles, and environment. Because of this, for many people it's important to take steps to help the body optimally cleanse itself by opening up detoxification pathways, supporting liver and gallbladder health, and raising the body's levels of glutathione, a key detoxification enzyme.
The detoxification support outlined in this article may be especially beneficial for anyone who lives in polluted areas or suffers from:
Detoxing is also very important for those trying to lose weight in a safe, healthy manner. A build-up of toxins in the body can inhibit cellular respiration, a crucial metabolic process in which biochemical energy is converted from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP). If cellular respiration is burdened by toxins in the body such as heavy metals, it can slow or alter your metabolism, which can impact your ability to lose weight.
Additionally, studies have shown that environmental pollutants trapped in fat cells can be released back into circulation when you lose weight. Working to flush these released toxins from your bloodstream and other tissues as promptly as possible supports optimal health during a weight loss program.
How Do Coffee Enemas Help Detox the Body?
One of my primary recommendations for detoxifying the body is to do the 3-step enema series protocol, which consists of three back-to-back therapeutic enemas, each with a different solution. The first two enemas in this series clean out the colon and prepare it for the coffee enema, which is the third enema in the series.
Coffee enemas provide detoxification benefits to the liver and gallbladder. One of the primary ways in which coffee enemas support detoxification is by stimulating the liver to produce more bile, which is passed to the gallbladder for concentration and storage. Bile is a digestive secretion which helps us digest fat and into which many toxins are dissolved for removal from the body. Coffee enemas also help the muscles of the bile duct to relax, allowing the gallbladder to release its stored bile into the small intestine.
It's important to have a binding agent present in the body at the time of a coffee enema — I recommend chlorophyll — to tightly bind the toxins released at this time to prevent their reabsorption into the body.
Additionally, coffee enemas increase the body's production of glutathione s-transferase (GST), a key detoxification enzyme that helps the body process and eliminate toxins.
Adding certain essential oils to your coffee enema, such as tangerine or the OHN Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend can help raise the body's glutathione levels and make coffee enemas even more effective.
The Importance of Regular Bowel Movements
Keeping your bowels moving is always important to your health, but especially so when detoxing. Stool is waste — full of toxins, carcinogens, unhealthy microbes, and more — that our bodies work to eliminate. If you aren't moving stool out of your body daily, the colon may reabsorb harmful toxins present in the stool, which can damage your gut microbiome and lead to more serious health issues.
The enema series protocol can help relieve constipation, improve colon and microbiome health, and support the detoxification pathways of the liver and gallbladder.
Detox Dos and Don'ts
There are some general guidelines that everyone should follow when detoxing to help ensure a healthy and effective program:
- To minimize the introduction of new toxins, it's important to eat organic food and use organic cosmetics and personal care products during and after a detox protocol.
- Use only BPA-free and phthalate-free plastic.
- Drink a lot of water while detoxing (and always!).
- Getting good sleep is important to effectively detoxing.
If You Are Also Fasting
If you're interested in fasting alongside your detox/colon cleansing protocol, I recommend following the nutritious liquids fasting guidelines laid out in my Ten Days to Optimal Health program, and using the OHN 5-Day Fasting & Detox Kit (more info below).
Supplements to Support Detox
- Chlorophyll is my recommended binding agent to take prior to doing a coffee enema so the toxins released exit the body and are not reabsorbed.
- NEW! OHN Heavy Metals Detox Kit — This kit contains four key supplements, including Ortho Z-Binder, to help you detox from toxic heavy metals including copper, mercury, aluminum, and lead.
- Ortho Z-Binder is a broad-spectrum binding formula which supports the detoxification of heavy metals and harmful toxins from the GI tract and helps maintain normal inflammatory balance.
- Researched Nutritionals ToxinPul assists the body to remove toxins and supports the health of the liver and kidneys.
- Researched Nutritionals Tri-Fortify Liposomal Glutathione provides the body with glutathione plus vitamin C in an absorbable liposomal delivery system.
- Researched Nutritionals ATP Fuel optimizes energy in the body, and would be helpful to take if you're feeling fatigued while detoxing.
- Researched Nutritionals Endo-Met GB-3 enhances biliary output and assists in the removal of toxic metals from the liver.
- Ortho Reacted Magnesium — It's important to make sure your bowels are moving well when detoxifying, with or without enemas. Reacted magnesium, or my entire Bowel Management Program, can be an effective stool softener if you're experiencing constipation. Magnesium also has detox properties, and glutathione requires magnesium for its synthesis. Additionally, studies have shown that magnesium supplementation can be very beneficial to liver health.
OHN 5-Day Fasting & Detox Protocol
With nutritious liquids and supplements supporting you throughout the fasting process, the OHN 5-Day Fasting Program outlined in Ten Days to Optimal Health is designed to be a healthy, rejuvenating way to fast and detoxify the body. It's a good idea to follow the Ten-Day Diet for a period of time prior to starting the fast (at least 2-4 weeks), to start reducing the toxin load in the body and reduce potential detox side effects, especially if you think your body has a lot of stored toxins.
Each component of the OHN 5-Day Fasting & Detox Kit has a different function to support the body through fasting and detoxing. The fiber in the kit gives toxins and bacterial waste something to adhere to while passing through your colon. The bentonite clay carries a negative electric charge and attracts positively charged pathogenic organisms and toxins and helps to carry them out of the body. The other supplements in this kit provide your body with extra nutrients needed to keep your immune system fully functional while you do the hard work of fasting.

When using the kit, it's important to use a binding agent such as chlorophyll as well as other nutritious support (such as the supplements included in the kit) to make sure you're detoxing in a non-damaging way.
HTMA Testing
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a valuable tool to support you with detoxing. Most importantly, it will provide you with information about your body's heavy metal levels, which will let you know whether or not you need to focus on removing toxic metals from the body.

Additionally, certain minerals such as magnesium are important to the body being able to effectively detox, so it's a great idea to do an HTMA to ensure that your mineral levels and ratios are in a good place prior to starting a detox protocol.
